This is so wonderful! We need more school librarians like Margaret around. I adore this idea.

I'm a former school teacher and respect the hard work teachers and librarians do. It goes unthanked and unappreciated again and again.

I like the lesson this librarian did, too, but wish she would choose different books. Both misrepresent Native peoples and cultures, and we need not do that, right?

I am a former school teacher and professor in American Indian Studies. I study representations of Native people and culture in children's and young adult books. I've written for Horn Book, School Library Journal and Language Arts.

Here's some thoughts on ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS:

And here's some on GHOST HAWK:

I'm happy to talk with people about book choices, lesson plans etc.

Margaret is an engaging, innovative librarian. I wish more were like her. What a great experience to introduce at elementary level.
