After publishing Rapunzel's Revenge and Calamity Jack, one of the most common questions posed to me and my husband/cowriter Dean is: "What is it like to collaborate?" We made this 90 second film hoping to shed more light on that question.
So, does that answer your question? #helpful
We made this movie a couple of years ago for our talk at the SCIBA dinner (So-Cal indie booksellers). We also demonstrated our collaborative process through a Spanish telenovela and interpretive movement, as is our wont. I think it was enlightening--especially for those in attendance who had taken advantage of the open bar. Our dear friend An Dinh shot and edited it. He and his awesome wife Tamiyah make a random appearance. Shout out to Bugsy the Guinea Pig, the true star of this profound work of artistic genius.
Also, please join me weekdays in July for the Squeetus Summer Book Club. A chapter a day in Princess Academy in preparation for the August release of Palace of Stone.
In the words of my almost 6 year old, "That's creepy." Open bar likely would help with the enlightening-ness.

hahaha. So collaboration is strange and silly and random and involves a lot of typing, then?

It's so...French.

I am impressed that you managed to keep straight faces that long. I wouldn't have managed.

The amount I'm laughing at this video has my 16-month-old son really concerned.

Oh.

As one who is collaborating with her hubbie right now, I have to say--Yes. It's like endless typing as your spouse stalks you swimming through water while an evil guinea pig laughs at you. I could relate. NOT. You need a to add a yelling/weeping sequence.

So awesome!
Always fun when something cracks you up just by its utter randomness. Maybe next time you should convey the collaborative process in a series of abstract paintings :-)

Before watching this film, I had no idea how it was possible for Shannon Hale to be even more awesome. But now I do.

My first thought was, "What were the neighbors thinking when they were filming this." And then I imagined they might be used to strange goings-on at the Hale household.

Just a question, Do you see/talk to James Dashner often?
Posted by: Ashley R. | June 26, 2012 at 12:56 PM
This was awesome. I also wondered what your neighbors were thinking. But my first thought was, "I want these people to be my parents/friends/neighbors/acquaitances." Purely for story inspiration. You understand.

That was totally hilarious! I was laughing so hard, I had to show my brother and mother. They were also laughing. But I have to say, we were all thinking...totally random, and weird. But I liked it though. Every time I think about it, I have to laugh a little. :)
